HEADLINING

In the build-up to Christmas 2000, we found ourselves with the chance to take some downtime in London after a 3–3 draw at Charlton. It was almost as if I knew something was going to happen because I recall vividly the build-up. We had been given a rare Sunday off the following day and this was an ideal opportunity to enjoy a night out in the capital. A lot of the guys were staying down, even Becks and Giggsy and Coley, and I recall us all discussing our plans for the evening as we showered after the game.

‘Tonight, boys, I need to meet someone,’ I said half joking, half thinking that something would happen. ‘This is the night when I finally get it on with Natalie Imbruglia.’ She was my dream date of that moment – sadly in my dreams is where she stayed – and there was much chuckling and banter about my prospects (or lack of them) of meeting up with her. It was all good fun and set the tone for the night. We were staying at the Sanderson Hotel, right in the heart of Soho and the best place to stay for reliable and discreet security and a suitably trendy setting. It was always a good starting point and I was relaxed and excited about the night ahead. I was meeting up with my old pal Kona and a more recent acquaintance Ade, the actor who had recently scored such a big hit in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch.

When it was time to move on to a club there was only one choice at that time – Attica, just a short distance away and the place to see and be seen.

So I’m walking into the club and I’m in my own zone, scanning around when I suddenly feel a nudge in my back from Kona as he alerts me: ‘Look, right in front of you – it’s that Jordan.’

Jordan? Just a few yards away was a small but strikingly attractive woman I instantly recognized as the model who had been making a name for herself in the tabloids. She was twenty-two and originally from Brighton but all I knew about her that night was that she had become famous for what was staring back at me now. She was quite a picture with that famous, surgically enhanced figure squeezed inside what I recall was a sort of police uniform outfit revealing plenty of cleavage. This was the party season and I presumed she was on a girls’ night out. It was difficult not to look at her.

As she walked by me I grabbed her hand and said the first thing that came to mind: ‘How ya doin’?’ Not the best opening line but it would have to do.

Her reply was equally tacky: ‘Hiyaaaa.’

Could I get her a drink? I asked. Sure she replied before heading for the ladies.

We soon hooked up and stayed in each other’s company all night. Our respective friends got on well too and as we settled in for drinks in one of the Attica booths, the night passed easily and effortlessly.
